Student Services Team

School Social Worker

Elisa Abelson

As a member of the school mental health team, social workers address social, emotional, economic, cultural, and environmental barriers that may interfere with a student’s academic success. I work with school staff and families to reduce and overcome obstacles that are impacting a student’s learning and achievement. I am also available to families to assist with school needs and provide resources in the community. I have worked for Prince William County Schools since 1999, and I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 30 years of experience working with children and families in school and clinical settings.

School Social Worker

Ms. Manuella Hawes

In my role as School Social Worker, I collaborate with schools and families to help remove the barriers to learning that a student may be facing. My support to families and schools includes: sharing strategies with school teams to help improve student behavior; providing families with referrals to private/community providers for various services; assisting families with connecting to community resources for food and shelter; providing direct behavioral and social-emotional support to students in small group or one-on-one; supporting students and their families regarding the special education process.  I have worked in the public-school system, for 9 years, serving families from diverse cultural and socioeconomic groups. I have provided direct case management and group work services to adults with serious mental illnesses utilizing a variety of clinical modalities.  I am trained in and practice trauma-informed care.  Lastly, I am a native Spanish speaker and provide support in Spanish as well.
